Be the Lime An Insider's Guide to College takes readers deep into the real issues college students current face in Higher Education. Andrew Lambert pulls back the curtain on many of the nasty little secrets that administrators and faculty would prefer to keep buried. You'll learn how to graduate on time, how, why, and when to get friendly with faculty, how to navigate the many dangers of Greek Life and studying abroad, and much more. Be the Lime cuts through the nonsense to serve up college life as it really is, and shows you how to make the most of it.

Andrew Lambert's clear and funny prose has a terrific cadence to it. Conversational and informative, it holds the reader like a pal relating a juicy story at your favorite bar. Obviously not a novice, Lambert conveys first-hand knowledge of the dangers those entering higher education face. The subject isn't new territory, however the theme is both timely and unique. Instead of dumping the reader on an assembly line to be boxed up by the Profiting College machine, Lambert provides keys to the shackles that universities attempt to put on prospective students and an escape route into and among the machinery that runs the dubious factory. To keep from being assimilated like a Star Trek Borg, one must take their destiny in their own hands. People who become victims of higher education are lemons; people who defeat it and find success are limes. This is more of a long essay than a book, which finds the reader wanting more. It lacks citation supporting the claims made about college and university practices. While direct quotes from letters Lambert had been sent by former students and teachers, the book could use a few more, perhaps even from students currently navigating the higher education world to support how relevant the book's theme is. The catchy title is also used too much throughout the narrative, becoming repetitive.
Despite those criticisms, this is a great book. Its optimism is infectious, despite the very real dangers of which it warns the reader. Higher education used to be revered, and rightly so. But when colleges and universities let their greed turn them into Donald Trumps and Bernie Madoffs instead of havens for the Einsteins, Marie Curies, and Stephen Hawkings of the world, students were (and are) viewed as cattle to support already obese institutions, eliding individuality, and crushing dreams of rigorous but beneficial academic training. Lambert tells the reader it doesn't have to be that way. Limes won't let themselves be homogenized into lemonade--they reject the lemons and demand more palatable beverages.
I recommend this book to any prospective student. It's helpful and sincere, as well as fun to read.
